Talking to Scotland!!!

We looked on the map to find New Zealand and then looked for Scotland.  We discovered it was a really long, long way away from Westport!  The Commonwealth Games are in Scotland and we talked about the kilts that are worn.

We were surprised  to discover that in Scotland it was night time, but in New Zealand, it was daytime!
Next we did something amazing with the iPad!  We used it to FaceTime friends in Scotland!

We talked to Hazel and Bruce who live near Glasgow.  They had Scottish accents and sounded different to us!

We all had a turn to ask some questions such as:
What food do you eat in Scotland?
What sort of blanket have you got?
What colour is your TV?
Do your children go to school like us?
What colour is your couch?

These were interesting questions Room 6!

It was great to talk to people all the way over in Scotland, I know Hazel and Bruce enjoyed talking to you all Room 6!

Next we wrote our stories about Scotland.  This is our work...

"It's night in Scotland.  I love Scotland".   By Seth

"We looked at the iPad in Scotland."  By Harrison

"We are talking to Scotland." By Conrad.

"I went to Scotland". By Jesse

" I went to Scotland". By Carey

"I am throwing the heavy ball to get the gold medal.
Hazel is watching." By Ella-Rose

"I liked to talk to Bruce and Hazel".  By Emily

"I am talking to Hazel and Bruce." By Porsha.

Kieran:

"Scotland has a load of furniture for Hazel."  By Liam

This is great writing Room 6, I think Hazel and Bruce will love looking at your pictures on the blog.

We also talked about bagpipes and listened to some bagpipe music on YouTube.

Room 6 now know quite a few things about Scotland and the Commonwealth Games!

Sorting Maths Materials

These are photos of the children manipulating and sorting maths materials.  The girls organised themselves into a small group and were making plates of counters and beans.

Seth was using the Sorting Box to see which objects went together.

Harry, Kieran and Liam were using the duplo to do some building.

Manipulating materials helps us with fine motor skills and early mathematical concepts.
Room 6 - which activity do you like the best?

Alphabet letters

Congratulations Emily for knowing all the letters of the Alphabet!

This afternoon Room 6 went to choose their library books.  Congratulations to everyone for Returning your books on time!
This is our focus for the week!  Some children  also demonstrated other ways to show H.E.A.R.T.  in the library such as being responsible for books and helping others choose!  Great work Room 6, can you tell your Parents some others ways to show H.E.A.R.T. at our school?

25 nights of reading

A huge congratulations to Seth for achieving 25 nights of reading homework!  Keep up this fantastic work Seth!

Rubbish Survey

Neal and Taylor from Room 1/2 came and asked us what we do with our rubbish.
These were our answers ...
Our wrappers from food go home in our lunchbox.
Fruit scraps go into the school compost.
We write and draw on the back of paper.

Writing

Conrad and Seth are practising writing 'I'.  It is a really useful word to write in our stories.  Room 6 - can you write 'I am?'

Our letter of the week was Aa and we made these Amazing Apples.

We had to follow instructions really carefully to finish our apples.

Look what we did for numeracy today!  We counted ten apples to put on our heads after we had read the book "Ten apples up on top" by Theo Le Seig.  Practise counting and ordering numbers to 10 with your child.

Amazing Art

Look at our beautiful pieces of art we produced today.  We had to think carefully about the parts of our bodies and then draw the outline in black.  They look great!
